The socialism that is talked about in the world today was made meaningful by Maharaja Agrasen 5000 years ago. Maharaja Agrasen is called the true pioneer of socialism. Maharaja Agrasen gave birth to a new system in counteraction to the Tantric system of governance. In order to establish true socialism in his area, Maharaja Agrasen had made a rule that every resident of the city would give him one rupee in cash and a brick to help every person coming from outside and settling in his city, so that it would be easy for him to get a place of residence and a house. Money should be arranged for doing business. He took the lead in the reorganization of the state by implementing the basic beliefs of Vedic Sanatan Arya Sanskriti, along with the development of agriculture-trade, industry, cow-rearing as well as re-establishment of moral values. Maharaja Agrasen was the pioneer of socialism, a man of the era, a supporter of Ram Rajya and a great donor. Maharaja Agrasen was one of those great personalities who would remain immortal for ages by doing works for the welfare of all.
According to religious beliefs, Maharaja Agrasen was born in the thirty-fourth generation of Maryada Purushottam Lord Shri Ram in the house of Maharaja Vallabh Sen of Suryavanshi Kshatriya clan, at the end of Dwapar and the beginning of Kaliyuga, on Ashwin Shukla Pratipada, which is celebrated worldwide as Agrasen Jayanti. . King Vallabh had two sons named Agrasen and Shursen. Agrasen Maharaj was the eldest son of Vallabh. At the time of Maharaja Agrasen’s birth, sage Garga had told Maharaja Vallabh that this child would become a great king. A new governance system will emerge in his kingdom and his name will be immortal even after thousands of years. No one was unhappy or helpless in his rule. From his childhood he was very popular among his subjects. He was a religious, peace messenger, Praja Vatsal, anti-violence, who stopped the practice of sacrifice, Karunanidhi, a compassionate king who had love and affection for all living beings.
Maharaja Agrasen was a Suryavanshi Kshatriya king. Who had adopted Vanik Dharma for the welfare of the people. Maharaj Agrasen married Princess Madhavi in the Swayamvar organized at the place of King Kumad of Nag Lok. With this marriage, a new alliance of Nag and Arya clan took place.
After the death of Maharaja Vallabh, Maharaj Agrasen traveled all over India with his queen Madhavi to establish his new kingdom. During this, he found lion and wolf cubs playing together at one place. They thought it was a divine message indicating them to establish a kingdom on this heroic land. On the advice of sages and astrologers, the new state was named Agreyagan, which is known as Agroha. That place is near Hisar of today’s Haryana. Even today this place is like a place of pilgrimage for Agrahari and Agrawal community. There is a grand temple of Maharaj Agrasen and Maa Lakshmi Devi here. Agrasen handed over the Rajpat of Pratapnagar to his younger brother Shursen. It is believed that Maharaja Agrasen was the grandfather of the Agrawal caste.
Along with earning money through hard work and industry, he emphasized on its equal distribution and spending less than the income. While on the one hand the Vaishya caste was provided with scales as a symbol of business, on the other hand, emphasis was also laid on the education of the use of weapons for self-defense. At that time, performing Yagya was considered a sign of prosperity, wealth and prosperity. Maharaj Agrasen performed many yagyas. Once, seeing the horse brought for sacrifice in Yagya very restless and scared, he thought that what is the use of such prosperity which is drenched in the blood of dumb animals. At the same time, he banned animal sacrifice even when his ministers did not want it. That’s why even today the Agravansh society stays away from violence.
By the grace of Mother Lakshmi, Shri Agrasen had 18 sons. Prince Vibhu was the eldest among them. Maharishi Garg made Maharaja Agrasen take a pledge to perform 18 Yagya with 18 sons. It is believed that the Agravansh (Agrawal Samaj) was established in the name of 18 gurus who sat in the Yagyas. The 18 gotras given by the sages were adopted by the 18 sons of Maharaja Agrasen along with the residents of the 18 settlements established by the Maharaja. In order to maintain love with one locality, a unanimous decision was taken that they will marry their son and daughter in another locality and not in their own locality. Later on, this system changed into gotras, which is still prevalent in the Agrawal society.
Maharaj Agrasen ruled for 108 years. On the one hand, Maharaj Agrasen accepted the field of work prescribed for Vaishya Varna in Hindu scriptures and on the other hand established new ideals in the perspective of the country. There are basically three ideals of his life – democratic governance, economic equality and social equality. After attaining a certain age, after consulting Kuldevi Mahalakshmi, he handed over the governance of the Agreya Republic to his eldest son Vibhu and went to do penance.
It is said that once there was a huge fire in Agroha. He could not be controlled in any way. Thousands of people became homeless due to that fire and settled in different states of India in search of livelihood. But he did not give up his identity. All of them still prefer to be called Agarwals and have maintained their identity with the same 18 gotras. Even today all of them are engaged in the service of the society by following the path directed by Maharaj Agrasen.
